Spanish: tiburon azul, tintorera
Upper body cobalt blue, lower body white. Maximum weight 230kg (500lb). Floppy long pectoral fins, equa to head length. Large dark eye circled in white. Long slim body. No keel at junction of body and tail.
Open ocean on and wide of continental shelf. Although known to exist, both Mexico coasts provide only occasional numbers.
Described as a "slightly mobile log". Sluggish fighter that only shows power and real resistance to capture at weights above 90kg (200lbs). Often ignores hook and line pressure and swims back to source of chum to give opportunity for quick captures on light line.
